Imaam Abi Bakr al-Hussain ibn Mas’ud al-Baghawee (d. 516AH)

The scholars (may Allah have mercy upon them) — and from them this Imām — have given importance to clarifying the correct Creed and Belief, and to repelling whatever doubts have become attached to it, because of the need of the people for that particularly after the appearance of the deviated sects with the Creed and Belief, and with their doubts; so therefore the scholars needed to clarify the correct Creed and Belief and to refute whoever opposed it.

So, this continued from the earliest time; the scholars continued giving importance to the matter of Creed and Belief. So, they wrote many words about it from the earliest scholars and from the later scholars, writing books with different titles — some of them called the books of Creed and Belief ‘Kutub As-Sunnah’ (the books of the Sunnah), such as the book ‘As-Sunnah’ by Abdullah the son of Imām Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, and this book ‘As-Sunnah of Al-Khallāl, and the book: As-Sunnah of Ibn Abī Āsim.

This is a an Urdu rendition of this magnificent book of Imaam al-Baghawee, in its field, without which no seeker of knowledge can suffice, for it is from the most esteemed books of the Prophetic Sunnah that have reached us from the heritage of the Salaf in terms of arrangement and refinement, harmonisation and precision.

It demonstrates the expertise of its author, may Allah have mercy on him, in the noble Prophetic Sunnah and their criticism, his knowledge of chains of transmission and their hidden defects, erudition in the sayings of the Companions and their Followers, the leaders of the various lands. I do not know of another book on the Sunnah that enriches one in the way that it does.’
